Lots of cold and some snow in the forecast for Squaw Valley over the next couple of days. A cold trough is currently pushing its way down the West Coast and will arrive Thursday morning.
Enjoy the 70 degree days today and tomorrow before the big flip to Winter comes on Thursday. Squaw has been testing out the snow guns already this week on a few cold nights but there will be excellent snowmaking conditions coming along with some natural snow.
This will be my last weather post of the season but it's an exciting one as we have a lot of snow on the way this week. It looks like we will continue to have great conditions here in April after a great March.
Squaw Valley picked up another 14 inches yesterday which brought the 4 day total to 34 inches as of Thursday morning. It also brought the total for March to 166 inches! That means more snow has fallen in the month of March than had fallen all season through the end of February.
March has been good to us so far and there is more snow on the way this week. Squaw had only picked up 142 inches before March and has now picked up another 137 inches in the month of March. With the snow coming Tuesday night we will double what had fallen Nov-Feb in the month of March.
Squaw ended up with a total of 8 feet over the past week. That is on top of the 3 feet from the first week of the month bringing the total for March up to 130 inches. That makes a miracle March so far as we had only picked up 142 inches for the entire season prior to March. The month isn't over yet and we will have 3 more chances at seeing a
As of this morning Squaw has picked up over 3 feet up top this week. The snow levels dropped overnight and it snowed hard all the way down to the base today. We will have snow totals in the morning but at least a foot of snow fell today up top.
We picked up another 16 inches since Tuesday morning bringing the storm total so far this week to 22 inches, and the snow keeps falling with no end in sight.
We saw a couple inches of snow up top this morning from a weak system that pushed through. That will be a distant memory as a trough is about to setup off the coast streaming continuous moisture into the Sierra starting Monday night. It will easily be the biggest week of snow so far this season.
Big Change for Tuesday as the mild air is replaced by cold air and we could see 4-8 inches of snow on the mountain. The snow should be falling by the time the lifts are turning Tuesday morning. The cold front will bring a quick burst of snow as it moves through with colder air behind it. Highs will only be in the 20s and 30s.
