Weakening Storm to Bring Snow Showers / Wed. Night & Thurs. 12/15

Submitted by tchang December 25, 2011 - 2:27pm Weather

There is a storm coming onshore currently but it weakening as it approaches. We should see some snow showers tonight and Thursday along with some colder air, but not expecting more than a dusting.  These storms are just bits and pieces breaking off from the jet stream well to our North in Canada. They are sneaking in just to the ridge that has been parked off the coast for the past 3 weeks. We are not strangers to long dry spells here in Tahoe they tend to come in 4-6 periods when we do get them and they tend to be followed by prolonged periods of snowfall. It's like the rubber band theory of if you stretch it long enough one directions it will eventually snap back. The pattern will snap back eventually. Right now the teleconnection patterns in the Pacific and across the country are not favorable for a snowy pattern.  Low pressure has been spinning up near the Aleutian Islands and Souther Alaska sending the jet stream and storms into Western Canada. Next week activity will pick up in the Pacific NW as the ridge off the coast helping to keep the storms to our North moves East and is replaced quickly by another ridge.  That will happen a couple of times next week allowing storms to sneak into the Northwest every couple of days.  This doesn't help us to get the snow we need yet but it's a sign the pattern is starting to shift as we head into Winter. As we go later into the month and into Winter the La Nina pattern will start to take over. Eventually the trough will come into the Eastern Pacific and continue to push Southward. Right now the long-range forecast models are showing the low pressures sitting over Alaska and sending the jet stream into Western Canada shifting into the Northeastern Pacific and pushing the jet stream further down the coast towards CA.  Chances should continue to increase for a pattern shift and increased snowfall as we head towards the end of the month. -BA
