Snowfall Expected Tuesday through Thursday /

Submitted by ba November 18, 2013 - 8:12am Weather

Clouds will begin to increase today ahead of the subtropical jet that will stream moisture into the Sierra over the next few days.

Precip should begin to fall during the day on Tuesday.  The air in the basin is dry so it may take a little while for the precip to reach the ground.  Snow levels are expected to start around base level Tuesday and then slowly rise to near 7000 ft. by Tuesday night.

The snowfall on the mountain will be light with a slightly heavier burst possible Tuesday night and again Wednesday night.  Normally during prolonged events like this the snow levels come down a little during heavier bursts and then rise during breaks in the precip.  They may fluctuate between 6500-7500 ft. because of that Tuesday night into Wednesday. Through Wednesday expecting 3-6 inches of snow above 7000 ft. with up to 9 inches on the peaks.

Wednesday night into Thursday one last wave moves through associated with a cold front moving down from the North.  There is the possibility of another burst of snow with this.  Snow levels will drop below base level with this so there could be a few inches of accumulation in the village.  We could see another 3-6 inches on the mountain by the time the precip ends on Thursday.

The forecast models are in pretty good agreement this morning with precip totals through Thursday.  Snow totals on the mountain above 7000 ft. look to be in the 6-12 inch range.  It is possible a few peaks pick up just over a foot of snow.

This looks like it may be the only chance for snow until the first week of December.  We may see some colder air work in around Thanksgiving but other than that right now it looks dry through the end of the month after this system.  Of course that could change.

Stay tuned...BA
