We are waiting for a pattern change next week that looks more likely each day. Through the weekend we will have quiet weather with sun and highs in the 40's on the mountain and 50's at the base.
The mean ridge position is already out into the North Pacific and will shift into Alaska by the weekend. All of the forecast models are still showing the trough and low pressure system in the Eastern Pacific this weekend moving towards the West Coast. The latest forecast model runs have the initial front pushing precip in anywhere between Tuesday afternoon and the early morning hours next Wednesday. The system has cold air with it so the snow levels look fairly low. There is pretty good agreement that we see several inches of snow with the front Tuesday night through Wednesday on the mountain.
Then the center of low pressure moves inland Thursday into Friday bringing another round of precip. The question is how far South does it move inland. Some forecast models have it moving into the Pacific NW with lesser amounts of precip for Tahoe, while others have it moving into Northern CA with heavier amounts of snowfall for the mountains. We will have a better idea on potential snowfall amounts by the weekend.
There is fairly good model agreement as well that another system will drop down from the Gulf of Alaska bringing snow the weekend of the 29th, and again the first week of April.
