Several Inches of Snow Expected Saturday Night /

Submitted by ba February 13, 2014 - 8:44am Weather

A band of precip shifting South through Northern CA pushed over the Tahoe basin this morning.  That is bringing some light rain showers this morning.  Today is the best chance to see some light rain as the moisture feed off the Pacific sinks a bit South.

The moisture is expected to push back just to our North on Friday and Saturday.  The winds are picking up today and we should see strong ridge winds through Saturday.  The strongest winds may be Saturday afternoon just ahead of the system that will bring snow Saturday night.

Saturnday night into Sunday morning a colder system will dive further South bringing some light snowfall to the mountain.  Snow levels will fall quickly Saturday night and we should see snowfall all the way to the base by Sunday morning.  Current forecast models show 3-6 inches on the lower half of the mountain and up to 9 inches of snow on the upper half of the mountain by Sunday morning

Sunday afternoon into Monday we will dry out with a short break in the active weather.  Low pressure in the Gulf of Alaska will begin to shift down the West Coast off of British Columbia.  That will push colder air and the jet stream further South into Northern CA by Tuesday.  We could see some snow by Tuesday afternoon into Tuesday night.  Then on Thursday the main center of low pressure moves inland near the Canadian border and moves South over land bringing more cold air and another wave of snow Thursday.  Right now it is still a little early to pinpoint snowfall amounts.  We could see several inches of snow or more with each wave.

The ridge continues to shift East and could be sitting along the West Coast bringing dry conditions by the weekend of the 22nd.  As we go into the week of the 24th the long-range ensemble runs show the ridge along the West Coast and not weakening or shifting East until the end of the month.

Stay tuned...BA
