22 Inches and Counting /

Submitted by ba February 28, 2014 - 8:48am Weather

The snow continued to fall on the mountain most of the day yesterday and we added another foot up top bringing the storm total to 22 inches as of this morning.  Snow continues to fall this morning and a few more inches have already fallen since the report.

Moisture flowing up from the South ahead of low pressure off the coast moved in before sunrise this morning.  It has been snowing heavily across the Tahoe basin for the last few hours.  By this afternoon the snow will come in bands moving up from the South so we may see some breaks in the snowfall off and on going into this evening.  The snow will become more showery overnight into Saturday morning.

The forecast models have pulled back on precip totals this morning with most of the precip staying South of the lake after the heavy band this morning.  Totals by Saturday morning still look to be around 6-9 inches on the lower half of the mountain and 9-12 inches on the upper half by Saturday morning. .

The snow tapers off by Saturday morning but a moist onshore flow may keep scattered light showers going off and on up top through the weekend.  The European forecast model shows increased precip by Sunday afternoon into Monday morning ahead of the next system.  If the European is right we could see several more inches Sunday night into Monday morning.  Then we could see several more inches Monday night into Tuesday as a weak system pushes through.

A stronger storm looks to push in Wednesday night into Thursday.  We could see a foot or more with this system.

By next Friday the trough is further West in the Pacific and a ridge builds along the West Coast bringing a drier pattern.

Stay tuned....BA
